International Security Officer’s Day 2024
celebrating our wonderful security officers
Security officers do a fantastic job of keeping people and property safe around the clock. Their jobs aren’t easy. Things may be quiet with nothing much happening, then next minute they can be faced with life and death situations and have to make big decisions quickly.
In appreciation of our security officers, we are holding companywide celebrations to mark International Security Officers’ Day on Wednesday 24 July.
The internationally-recognised day originated in Australia and is now also celebrated in New Zealand, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Macau, India, Singapore, United Kingdom and Thailand.
Here are some examples of our people’s great work – from lifesaving action, to little things that made a big difference to members of the public.
Our loyal long-service award recipients: Year in and year out, our dedicated long-serving employees do a great job of helping keep people and property safe. Some are on the frontline, while others work behind the scenes. But all play a vital role in their own way. Our most recent Long Service Award recipients had worked between 5 and an impressive 35 years at Armourguard.
Anthony Stewart, Palmerston North Security Officer: Anthony had only been with Armourguard a few months when he had to deal with two different suicide attempts on the same day. It’s not often someone can say they have saved a life, much less doing that twice in one very eventful day. Anthony was recently awarded a NZ Security Association ‘Safed A Life’ medal in honour of his great work.
Jaco Earle, Dunedin Patrol Officer: An overseas tourist wrote to express their gratitude for Jaco’s kind-heartedness the car park closing time at a Dunedin attracting and finding their car locked in.
Jaco came to their aid soon after they called the contact number listed on the sign and reassured them while opening the gate. The tourist wrote: “I am very grateful for Jaco’s prompt assistance and apologize if we may have interrupted his rest time. Therefore, we are writing this letter to express our heartfelt gratitude and respect for Jaco. New Zealand is even more beautiful because of the kind-hearted people.”
Auckland CBD foot patrol team: Our foot patrol team members are doing a great job helping keep Auckland’s CBD safer during daylight hours in hot spots such as bus and train stations in the CBD and beyond.
Whanganui Security Officer Mark Te Ohaere was doing a routine security check at client’s processing site one evening when he heard an alarm beeping. While checking where it was coming from he discovered it was a smoke alarm triggered by a long wooden pallet on fire.
He immediately called emergency services, advised his supervisor, opened the front gates and directed the fire service when they arrived. The processing plant had only been re-opened for a few months after a previous fire destroyed a large part of it. Thanks to Mark’s quick actions, a repeat disaster was prevented.
Richard Agar, Dunedin static guard: Richard wowed an Otago client after he was deployed to provide visible security support to a local site staff following an incident with an aggressive customer.
The client wrote to say how awesome Richard was: “He welcomed our customers like they were visiting his home, helped them out with their queries and was so happy to be here that it was infectious. When he arrived he asked some very good questions about what we needed from him in the day. He is a credit to your business.”
One of our Christchurch teams received client praise for their professionalism when patrolling the client’s premises.
“Well done you have a polite personable professional team that you can be proud of, they remember me by name shake my hand if I bump into them and night and always friendly. I have had great feedback from the staff regarding the interactions they have had with the guards, and it has all been positive.”
